A woman, who posted bond after she was arrested following a
drunken driving crash that killed three Las Vegas teenagers in
Huntington Beach, was back in jail Sunday after being charged
with murder and after investigators learned she may have
intended to flee the country to avoid prosecution, police said.
Bani Duarte, 27, of San Clemente was arrested without incident
in Downey about 1 p.m. Sunday on a $5 million warrant,
Huntington Beach police said in a news release.
The Huntington Beach Police Department received help from the
Orange County U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the Orange
County District Attorneys office in monitoring the situation,
the release said.
Duarte was booked into the Huntington Beach City Jail on
suspicion of murder and felony driving under the influence, the
release said.
She is scheduled to appear in court Monday, April 30 at the West
Justice Center in Westminster.
About 1:08 a.m. on March 29, Huntington Beach police responded
to the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Magnolia Street for a
two-car crash.
Police found a red Toyota engulfed in flames. Four people were
inside when the car was hit, three of whom died at the scene.
The other victim was taken to a trauma center, Angela Bennett,
a department spokeswoman, said March 29.
The car, which was stopped at Pacific Coast Highway and Magnolia
Street, burst into flames after being struck by a white Hyundai
Sonata driven by Duarte, authorities said.
The three teenagers who died at the scene were later identified
as Dylan Mack, Brooke Hawley and Albert Rossi. They were
students at Centennial High School in Las Vegas and were in
Southern California on their spring break, according to media
reports.
Duarte, of San Clemente, was arrested at the time on suspicion
of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter. She
was uninjured.
Duarte initially was being held in lieu of $100,000 bond, but
posted bond and was released, police said. That was before
Sundays arrest.
As the investigation continued, more evidence was obtained.
Investigators received information the female driver was
possibly intending on fleeing the country to avoid prosecution,
Sundays release said.
