JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — A father of one of the suspects arrested
in the deadly rock-throwing crime spree was also arrested during the
investigation for obstruction.

Mark Edwin Koenig, the father of suspect Joseph Koenig, was arrested on
Tuesday when investigators showed up at his house to speak with his son.
Joseph Koenig was arrested in connection to the death of 20-year-old Alexa
Bartell who was killed when a rock hit her while she was driving in
Jefferson County.

According to the arrest affidavit, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office
investigators went to a home in Arvada on Tuesday night to detain a
homicide suspect.

When investigators arrived at the home, they spoke with Mark Koenig and
asked if his son was home, to which he said “yes.” Investigators told Mark
Koenig that they had some questions for his son and to call him to the
front door.

Since Joseph Koenig is 18 years old, he agreed to speak with the sheriff’s
office. His father went inside his home while they talked.

According to the affidavit, the father came back outside a few minutes
later and told investigators that he did not want his son going anywhere
that night and asked if the interview could be done the next day. One of
the investigators responded and said that Joseph Koenig was needed that
night.

Allegedly, Mark Koenig said that was not going to happen and was told by
an investigator to walk toward the street while JCSO used a warrant to
search his house.

According to the affidavit, the father asked, “You are going to do what?”

At that time, investigators said they attempted to control his arm but he
was able to pull away and went to go back inside his home.

Deputies were able to control Mark Koenig and pull him away from the
doorway and place him under custody, according to the affidavit.

He was charged with obstructing a peace officer.

Joseph Koenig faces a first-degree murder – extreme indifference charge
for his alleged role in a crime spree that involved seven victims.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Folks gathered Friday at the site where
Alexa Bartell died to pay their respects after the young woman was killed
by a rock thrown into her windshield.

Susan Eckhardt left flowers at a memorial site in Jefferson County.

“I wanted to come and pay my respects to her,” Eckhardt said.

Eckhardt said her son-in-law works with Bartell’s mother, and the family
had known her since she was a child.

Whoever is responsible for the crime remains at large. The Jefferson
County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

The crime affected Bartell’s family and friends. Eckhardt said her son-in-
law was so touched that he reached out to his own family.

“We were coming back from Phoenix,” Eckhardt said. “He even called us to
say, ‘I just want to tell you guys that when you lose somebody or know
somebody so well and they are lost in such a tragic way, I just want to
tell you how much I care for you.'”

What charges are possible in the rock attack case?
Mourning Bartell’s death, a community turns now to getting answers.

“I can’t imagine why someone would get kicks out of throwing rocks at
someone,” Eckhardt said. “Is this another Tik Tok thing or dare or
something like that?”

FOX31 legal analyst and former district attorney George Brauchler believes
the person or people responsible could face manslaughter charges.

“I also think that someone’s going to take a strong look at second-degree
murder in this case,” Brauchler said. “Knowingly engaging in behavior that
could lead someone to conclude that there could be a reasonable likelihood
of death or serious bodily injury.”

The reward for information about this case has gone up from $2,000 to
$17,000 thanks to a donation from someone close to Bartell’s family.

If you know anything that could help investigators, you are asked to call
Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Investigators in Jefferson County are
still searching for suspects following a bizarre crime spree Wednesday.

One person was killed and two others were injured after police say someone
threw landscaping rocks through moving cars on roads in Jefferson and
Boulder counties.

Up to $17,000 reward offered in deadly rock attack
Since those initial reports, investigators say “multiple” additional
reports have come in describing similar incidents in the area over the
past two months.

“We’re digging through all of those,” said Jacki Kelley, spokesperson for
the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. “We’re investigating every single
one of them, and we’ll see what develops today.”

Michael Marasco told FOX31 that he was driving on 80th Avenue between
Simms and Kipling streets in late February when a rock came flying through
his windshield. He believes it was thrown from oncoming traffic.

The Arvada Police Department confirmed investigators are now revisiting
that report to see if it might be connected to Wednesday’s incidents.

As of Friday afternoon, Kelley said no suspects had been identified.
