Video has surfaced of a BMW plummeting seven stories to the ground and
nearly landing on a Chevrolet Tahoe at street level.
The incident took place on July 13 at a parking garage in Austin, Texas.
The video, at just over a minute long, shows the driver of the Tahoe,
William Burch, slowly turning around in a downtown alley. But upon hearing
a distinct noise, the vehicle brakes, KXAN reported.
Burchs window was down, and in terrifying fashion, he quickly learned
what the source of the noise was: a BMW sedan falling seven stories to the
ground.
It smashes into the pavement front-first and then bounces onto the rear of
Burchs Tahoe.
The vehicle then rests on its roof as nearby witnesses, mostly
construction workers, rush to the scene.
The driver of the car reportedly suffered serious injuries from the
crash, KXAN reported. The surveillance footage shows workers rushing to
help the female driver.
Police said she mistook the gas for the brake and pushed right through
barriers on the uppermost level of the garage.
Burch did not sustain any injuries. Hed been speaking with his mother on
the phone at the time of the crash. I can just imagine what she was
thinking when I said, A car just landed on me, I gotta go.
A similar incident occurred at the same garage in September 2016. A 24-
year-old driver crashed through the barriers but a barrier cable caught
his SUV and he was rescued by a bystander.
The garage owner reportedly said that these are the only two incidents
like this to have occurred on the grounds.
Austin Code Department issued the garage a violation just days after the
barrier cable incident, KXAN reported. They cited unsafe conditions with
relation to the cable system.
The garage owner reportedly intends to redesign the barrier. In the
meantime, plastic barriers filled with water serve as buffers on the
level. The scene of the accident is marked off with caution tape.
