Obdulia Sanchez, the 18-year-old California woman accused of
livestreaming her sisters death via Instagram, has spoken out,
telling reporters she looked like a monster, but that
everybody livestreams while driving.
The crash occurred back in July, and it was very strange.
Sanchez was allegedly driving under the influence and filming
herself to post to Instagram at the same time. With her in the
car was her 14-year-old sister, Jacqueline, and their friend, 14-
year-old Manuela Seja. While still filming herself, Sanchez
apparently attempted to overcorrect her car, veered across the
multiple lanes, and crashed through a fence. The car flipped
over before landing in a field. Jacqueline Sanchez was thrown
from the car and fatally wounded. Seja was injured, but survived.
Though Sanchez briefly stopped livestreaming, she got out of the
car and picked the stream back up while standing over her
sisters bloody body.
I know Im going to jail for life. You already know why. My
sister is f*cking dying This is the last thing I wanted to
happen to us, but it just did, she announced.
Sanchez has since pleaded not guilty to a variety of charges
related to the fatal crash.
Everyone wanted to know what kind of moron would livestream
someones death, and lucky for the curious, Sanchez has spoken
with reporters. She told KSEE-TV, I didnt even know I looked
like a monster, like I looked like a freaking horrible monster.
Which is weird because any person who stands over a corpse and
films themselves babbling as they do it is inherently going to
look like a monster. That was not my intention at all, she
continued unhelpfully.
Sanchez said that theyd been perfectly freaking fine in the
moments leading up to the crash, indicating she wasnt even sure
how it happened. She said the car began veering left, she
started to stop it, and then the next thing she knew, theyd
flipped over. She said she panicked when she realized her sister
was no longer in the backseat, and that when she found the
younger girl, she knew she was dead after checking her pulse and
finding she had none.
Anyone with half a brain might suspect that filming oneself as
opposed to watching the road could be a leading cause of
crashing your car for no reason on a clear day. Yet Sanchez said
that she had done it while driving in the past without incident
and it wasnt a big deal.
Trust me, its like a reflex. Like I havent crashed, you know?
Everybody does it, she said. Everybody does. They take
Snapchats. Everybody does it. Why not? People take video of them
in cars like all the time. And Im only 18 were still young.
Everybody doesnt do it, and its also illegal in the state of
California to screw around with your phone while driving. And
her sister, younger by four years, will never get the chance to
be 18 because of this raging idiot.
She will next appear in court on September 13. She faces over a
dozen years behind bars if convicted as charged.
